Three years have passed. How?
It seems like only yesterday.
Time is funny that way.
Meet Anthony. He’s quiet, confident, thoughtful, and considerate. Three years ago, his brother Mateo was here, gearing up for senior year. Now it’s Anthony’s turn. Somehow, it feels like only a moment has passed, yet it also feels like it’s taken forever to get here.
Anthony plays golf for Cherokee Trail, and he’s an incredible player. Naturally, we chose Saddle Rock Golf Course—the school’s home course—for his senior pictures.
At one point during the session, we waited for the sun to sink lower in the sky while Anthony and his dad grabbed a hotdog from the clubhouse. As we waited, Anthony’s mom and I found ourselves talking about time.
How does it move both too slowly and too fast all at once?
One minute you’re driving a child to practice. The next you’re discussing college visits and talking with coaches.
One of the things Mateo told me three years ago was that he enjoyed golfing with his younger brother. Now that younger brother, Anthony, stood in front of my camera preparing for his own senior year, with plans to continue golf in college.
It felt like a full-circle moment.
Anthony hopes to continue playing golf in college and is already talking with a coach at one of the schools he has in mind. It’s a smaller college where his older brother currently attends, where his parents met, and where much of his extended family has gone to school, making the connection even more meaningful if he decides that’s where he wants to be.
Anthony plans to major in business, and I have no doubt he’s going to do amazing things. He’s the kind of young man who doesn’t need to be the loudest person in the room to make a lasting impression. I suspect his wonderful qualities, combined with his determination, will serve him well in whatever comes next.
Q&A with Anthony
Tell me all about playing golf.
It’s a complicating game but it has helped me a lot mentally during the time I have played.
Do you have any thoughts on what you’d like to do after graduation?
I just want to go to college and play golf then get a marketing degree.
What are some of your favorite childhood memories?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are all of the trips and vacations my parents had taken me on.
Tell me one thing you hope to accomplish your senior year.
One thing is to help my golf team win another state championship.
If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?
One thing I would tell my younger self is maybe starting golf younger would’ve definitely benefited me today but also just do what you want to do and not what someone else wants you to do.
Anthony, congratulations on this exciting year ahead! And as for the funny little thing called time, I hope you grab it by the horns and make the most of it. Play the rounds. Take the trips. Chase the goals. Before long, you’ll be wondering where the time went.
