If you’re like me, you may scratch your head at the question, “what is a rainbow baby?” Years ago, I began seeing this in the newborn photography world, and I had to do a little digging myself to find out the meaning. But what I found was incredibly sweet!
A rainbow baby is a baby born subsequent to a miscarriage, or passing of another baby. Mamas and Daddys that have a rainbow baby know just how special it is to have experienced an extremely painful loss, and then the joy of another child. To everyone that holds their rainbow baby close to their heart, they equally hold the child or children that they loved and lost just as close.
It is no easy thing to go through losing a baby. It’s such a sensitive topic, that I even wondered if blogging about it was appropriate. I would never want to bring pain, but I also realize that those precious little lives are treasured, important, meaningful, and should always be celebrated and remembered, regardless of how long they lived.
As a Christian, I am especially drawn to representing this special meaning with rainbows. I LOVE the rainbow! God gave the first one to Noah when He made a covenant with him and every living creature, that never again would He flood the earth. We live under that promise today, and also under the faithfulness of God. There’s no better symbol for the faithfulness of God than this one right here! That brings me so much joy!
As a newborn photographer, I imagine I’ve photographed countless rainbow babies. But I’ve only been made aware of it once – see baby Lincoln here. So I want to be sure my clients know that I am here for you. If you would like to incorporate a rainbow into your session, new to my stash is the sweet wrap you see below. Compliments to Red Owl Props for her gorgeous cheese cloth wraps. She’s AMAZING!
Each time I see a rainbow, I cannot help but feel God’s faithfulness deeply. Each time you hold your rainbow baby, may you experience exactly the same.
