There’s something about photographing the anticipation of waiting for a baby that holds my heart. Part of it is the miracle. Part of it is the beauty of an expectant mother. And part of it is the anticipation of a couple who is so excited to meet their little one.
Emma and Max are expecting their first baby this July, and you could feel their excitement the entire session.
It showed up in the way they looked at each other, the way Max touched Emma’s growing belly, and the way Emma smiled down toward her baby, still cradled safely inside.
One of my favorite things they shared was that they’re waiting until birth to find out the baby’s gender. There’s something especially sweet about choosing surprise. It feels rare these days, and somehow makes the anticipation even more meaningful.
Emma was just shy of 31 weeks pregnant during their maternity session. Her green dress brought out the green in her eyes — her favorite color. It’s also the color of the nursery, which will eventually be paired with pink if baby is a girl.
They’ve been calling the baby “Bean” while they wait. Mama is the planner. Daddy is the encourager. They are going to be wonderful parents! Here’s more about them.
Q&A with Emma
How many weeks pregnant are you?
I was just shy of 31 weeks pregnant during our photoshoot.
What do you enjoy doing together?
Our current activity of choice is board games! We love to sit down and play a game together. We also love to read, golf, and head out on a walk through the neighborhood. We’re really excited to make our “duo walks” “trio walks” !
What makes you laugh together?
We often reference “The Office” (the TV show) and that cracks us both up.
What is one thing about this pregnancy you don’t want to forget?
I have been blessed to have a smooth pregnancy so far, which has made the experience that much easier. One of my highlights has been feeling all of baby’s movements – it’s such a special feeling and absolutely nothing like it!
How would you describe the anticipation of meeting your little one?
As first time parents we are obviously anxious but mostly excited. Max particularly is so excited, he’s my lifelong cheerleader and so positive about everything. I’m the planner and more concerned about making sure everything is ready. He really brings me back to the reality of the exciting time that this is!! We are waiting to find out the gender of the baby until birth and that has been such a fun process. We can’t wait to be surprised. In the meantime, we have been calling our baby “Bean”, so we’ll see how much that nickname sticks after baby joins us!
