Her feet will take her big places! Meet Kylee! She will be a senior at Cherokee Trail High School. The start of school is just days away, and our students are facing new challenges this year. But one thing I’ve noticed with each one I’ve talked with is that they WILL rise above it. They will work hard, and they will achieve their goals, regardless of the fact that the road to get there has changed a little bit in the current pandemic culture we are in. I love their resilience! Kylee is a talented artist with admirable goals. Here’s more about Kylee!
Tell me about your love for art.
My love for art began back in kindergarten (as far as I can remember). My elementary school art teacher introduced a hobby for me that would last a lifetime. I’ve been taking art classes since 2nd grade both in school and outside classes. My tastes have definitely changed over the years; in elementary school I drew lots of fan art from my then favorite book series Warrior Cats. In middle school is when I began drawing people and creating my own characters. I was heavily inspired by cartoon and anime styles. High school is when I really began to flourish with the help from all the incredible art teachers I’ve had at Cherokee Trail. I draw realistic/semi realistic mostly, and am currently working on drawing a graphic novel.
How has the pandemic changed your thinking about school, your future, or just life in general?
The pandemic has really put me in for a loop! The last three months of my junior year was a mess and I feel my school didn’t do enough to prepare juniors for college applications until only recently. Compared to previous seniors, I feel my class is behind. I still want to become an art teacher, the pandemic hasn’t changed that. However with everything going remote I worry my education will be severely impacted both in my senior year and in college. I’ve always been a very traditional learner and remote learning has been very difficult for me.
Do you have any thoughts on what you’d like to do after you graduate?
I want to become an art teacher because then I can share my passion for art with other artists. Creating art is a story, whether you’re like me and are creating a graphic novel, or telling a symbolic story through a series of pieces. Sharing art is a key component of human society, it always has been and it always will be.
Tell me one thing you hope to accomplish your senior year.
I hope to earn scholarships so I can attend college, get my masters right away and finish my last year of high school with straight A’s.
If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self to keep doing the things you love even when it seems like you can’t, and to not be afraid to try new things because you miss out on a lot of life if you don’t leave your comfort zone every once in a while.
Kylee, I cannot wait for you to become the art teacher you’ve always dreamed of being. Best wishes for a wonderful senior year!
