Some sessions make your cheeks hurt from smiling. That was Nora’s. And she’s ready to help me give you some senior pictures with dogs ideas that actually work if you’re thinking about bringing your furry best friend to your senior session.
When you bring your dogs to your senior session, you’re not just adding a cute prop. You’re telling part of your story. For Nora, that meant including Rudi and Pedro—two little dogs with giant personalities. This wasn’t just a photo shoot. It was a celebration of her life, the people (and pups) she loves, and the new chapter she’s stepping into.
Ready to include your furry best friend? Here are my top senior pictures with dogs ideas to make it a success.
Table of Contents
1. Choose a Dog-Friendly Location
Not every park or trail allows dogs—so this needs to be step one. Whether you’re dreaming of tall grass, rocky rivers, or a wooded path, ask your photographer which spots are dog-approved and scenic. Nora’s location had all the best things: natural light, wild grass, and space for two dogs to roam.
2. Bring a Leash!
You’ll need a leash. But skip the retractable or bulky ones. Bring a slim, neutral-colored leash and stylish collar that won’t distract in photos. (Or coordinate it to your outfit.) A classic leather leash or a simple rope style can blend in beautifully in case it needs to make it into the photos.
3. Bring Treats
Dogs need incentives! High-value treats are a game-changer for getting them to look your way or stay in place.
4. Assign a Pet Handler for the Day
I always recommend bringing a friend, sibling, or parent who knows your dog and can take care of them between shots–someone other than the parent you were already bringing to the session. You’ll relax knowing your pup is in good hands—and your gallery will thank you. This to me, is the most important tip in this entire post dedicated to senior pictures with dogs ideas.
5. Decide How Long Your Dog Will Stay
Make a plan in advance. Dogs can come for the first 15 minutes, the last 15, or stay the whole time depending on their stamina (and your vision). Rudi and Pedro stayed for the first part of Nora’s session, then they walked with her dad until we were done. Her mom stayed with Nora, which is helpful for a second set of hands for outfits changes.
6. Tell Your Photographer About Your Dog’s Personality
Are they super friendly? A little shy? Do they bark at other dogs or get overwhelmed easily? Giving your photographer the inside scoop helps us plan poses and locations that work best for your dog—and you. It’s not about perfection, it’s about setting everyone up for success.
7. Keep Calm and Let the Candid Moments Happen
The best dog photos aren’t always posed—they’re real. A snuggle. A kiss on the nose. A moment of eye contact that says, “I’m so glad you’re mine.” Don’t stress about getting the perfect pose. When you relax and connect, the magic shows up.
Nora’s Outfits for Her Senior Pictures with Her Dogs
Not only do you need senior pictures with dogs ideas that actually work, you need some stunning outfits to match. Consider the colors of your dog(s), and choose colors that contrast. Nora’s style was effortless, natural, and classic:
- A white tank top and light-wash jeans gave a timeless feel with a modern twist. She layered it with an open gray linen button-up shirt for a few of her photos, creating soft texture and movement.
- A ribbed taupe tank paired with jeans offered a slightly earthier tone that felt grounded in the late summer grasses.
- Her final look—a strapless, deep burgundy dress—was elegant and simple, flowing beautifully by the water and across the rocks. It was the perfect way to close the session, barefoot and glowing in golden hour light.
Whether playful or poised, every outfit reflected Nora’s personality: thoughtful, grounded, and full of heart. And the one she chose to go with the dog photos is the one she showed up in–the ribbed taupe tank. It was perfect!
Q&A: Meet Nora (and Rudi and Pedro)
Tell me about your two pups.
I adore my two dogs, Rudi and Pedro, and they both have the biggest personalities for little dogs. Rudi has a constant stream of energy, but is still a sensitive little guy. We call Pedro a prince because of his high and mighty attitude, but it doesn’t stop him from being lovable.
Do you have any thoughts on what you’d like to do after graduation?
After graduation, I’m planning to study English and move on to a field in editing/publishing! I’ve always loved reading and writing, and being able to contribute to the written work that’s put out into the world would give me limitless joy. I hope to bring some great ideas to life.
What are some of your favorite childhood memories?
Spending time with my family and dogs has always been a big part of my life—those everyday, simple moments mean the most. (Note: this one wasn’t answered directly, so feel free to revise or remove.)
Tell me one thing you hope to accomplish your senior year.
My senior year, I’m hoping to make the most out of the time and experiences I’ll have with my friends and family. I’m not sure where I’ll land after graduation, but I want to make every moment count!
If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?
Put the most trust in yourself. My intuition and judgment have never failed me, and my choices always lead me down the best path meant for me.
