Wisdom

I’m so happy to have a moment for a long overdue Hidden in My Heart post!

Ya know how when something strikes you, it just keeps coming back to you over and over in different settings, and various ways.  Here’s a peek into my heart lately.  The subject of my constant thoughts and hearts meditation: WISDOM.

God tells us that wisdom is from Him.  There is a wisdom of this world that is perceived as wisdom, but even at it’s best, it’s foolishness to God.  Why?  Because God is the author and the giver of true wisdom.

For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.  Proverbs 2:6

There’s a wisdom of this world.  James wrote about it.  He said, in the context of wisdom, if we have bitter envy and self-seeking in our hearts, it is earthly, sensual and demonic.  I will pause for a moment just to be honest.  My heart can possess envy and self-seeking… and these are spoken of by James as worldly wisdom.

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.  James 3:13-16 NKJV

There is a wisdom that we’re told to seek after (Proverbs 4:7-9).  We’re told to take firm hold of it, and not to let it go (Proverbs 4:13).  We’re told to exalt this kind of wisdom and she will bring you honor, grace and a crown of glory on your head (Proverbs 4:9).  Here is what James wrote about this wisdom:

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.  James 3:17-18 NKJV

If I weigh my heart against these qualities of wisdom, I can get a clear picture of the existence (or lack of) of wisdom in my life:

Wisdom is…

pure

peaceable

gentle

willing to yield

full of mercy

full of good fruits

without partiality

without hypocrisy

sown in peace

meek (verse 16)

We could all admit we want wisdom.  But there’s only ONE source.  The source is the One who gives it liberally to all who ask… James 1:5 (look it up in your own Bible and be blessed by God’s own words to YOU about obtaining wisdom).  If you want to go even deeper, read through Proverbs, beginning with chapter one.  It will blow your mind what you learn!
