Ten Years Later: A Birthday Gift She’ll Never Forget

When Mama K reached out, she had one big goal: to squeeze in a family session before her two oldest daughters left for college. It had been ten years since their last “real” family photo—and in her words, “my children have gone from little kids to young adults and teenagers.” This session wasn’t just overdue. It was intentional. Thoughtful. A birthday gift to herself.

The kind of gift that says, Let’s slow down. Let’s remember this.

We planned around the unpredictable Colorado rain, fitting the session into one of the few dry evenings available. Even with packed schedules and college countdowns, this family made it happen so we could celebrate their togetherness.

And Mama K sees it. She’s savoring the lazy nights where everyone’s still under the same roof. The dinners that stretch into lingering talks. The humor that bubbles up when Dad’s “Dad jokes” get rolling.

Meet the K Family: Q&A

How old are your kiddos?
Our kids are 21, 19, 16, and 12.

What does your family enjoy doing together?
As a family, we love to travel! Whether road trips or flying to Mexico or Europe, we love exploring new places together.

What makes you guys laugh together?
I’m not sure if we really laugh, but the kids have a great time humoring their dad when he gets started telling “Dad” jokes.

What is one thing about this season of life that you don’t want to forget?
With two kids away in college and one nearing the end of high school, I am trying to hang on to as many small memories as I can and to cherish the slow, lazy nights where we’re all at home together just talking. Maybe lingering at the table after supper talking, listening, and laughing.

Describe what your family means to you.
They are God’s biggest blessing to me.

Whether it’s been ten months or ten years since your last family photos, here’s your reminder: it’s always the right time to tell your story. The in-between. The growing-up. The quiet evenings you’ll one day wish you could relive.

K Family, thank you for letting me witness a glimpse of that. Happy birthday. I hope every photo feels like the gift you intended it to be.
