He sent from above, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. Psalm 18:16 NKJV
The word “took” in Hebrew is laqach. It means:
to take, get, fetch, lay hold of, seize, receive, acquire, buy, bring, marry, take a wife, snatch, take away
He took ME.
Remember the woman who came to the well? This woman came, as was common for her, to fetch water. Little did she know she would be fetched that day. Jesus was there. She was a Samaritan, and He was a Jew. She was a woman, he was a man. Her first surprise was that He was even talking to her, for those reasons. By the end of their conversation Jesus had identified the sin in her life, had offered her living water (Himself) and declared to her that He was the Messiah, bringing to her a place where she must choose belief or unbelief, her life of sin or righteousness. When we see that this woman is a picture of us, that Jesus offers us living water after he identifies our sin, asking us to forsake all and follow Him, we see the depth to this story.
Do you know how many men in the Bible found wives at a well? When we come to the well, Jesus offers us Living Water. When we accept His offer, he lays hold of us. We’re received, acquired, gotten, fetched (all those things that define the Hebrew word “took”.) We’re snatched out of the enemies hand and we belong to Jesus. We become his bride. We’re given to Him in marriage. We’ve been taken. Oh how my heart sings to know he wanted to take ME. It’s the most beautiful love story ever told. He TOOK ME! And now I’m hidden in Christ Jesus.
He sent from above, He took me; he drew me out of many waters…
The many waters we’re surrounded by threaten to swallow us up. But He’s there drawing us out. Those many waters cannot quench his love for you (Song of Solomon 8:7).
When the world tells us we’re not good enough, we’re not accepted, we’re nothing… Jesus tells us we’re everything! I sent from above to take you to be Mine. I drew you out of the many waters because of my great love for you. I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t want you. I suffered for you. By my stripes I heal you. I esteem you. You are engraved on the palms of my hands. I bought you with my own blood. You belong to Me.
Oh what joy it brings to my heart to let these word settle deep in my heart. Another translation puts it like this:
He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters. Psalm 18:16 NLT
I praise the Lord today because I’ve been taken, rescued, redeemed, snatched up, given in marriage and I am His!
