Hey class of 2022! You’ve been waiting, maybe even counting the days. As your junior year soon comes to a close, it’s time to begin thinking about everything related to your senior year and this includes YOUR SENIOR PICTURES! Here are a few things to consider…
When should I have my senior pictures taken?
Plan ahead, especially if you have a yearbook deadline! As soon as your junior year has ended, it’s time to schedule pictures. Many seniors have them taken in the summer; some wait for the fall. Either way, your photographer of choice may not have availability if you don’t schedule early. Take note of your school’s yearbook deadline and plan to make your first contact with your photographer a few months in advance.
What about wardrobe?
I recommend (and include) 4-5 outfit changes, and most photographers will too. I personally like a mix of dressy and casual. Pair that perfect pair of pants with an awesome shirt that you love. Jackets, hoodies, skinny jeans, t-shirts, button-downs, maxi dresses, and anything else you love to wear are on the table for consideration! Include a variety of color, texture, patters and don’t forget to layer. Most importantly, make sure your clothing choices represent YOU, your taste, style, and quirks. Will my shoes show?
They won’t show in every picture, but they may in some. Consider shoe changes – or even shoes off for a few pictures!
(Girls) Should I change my hairstyle during the shoot?
Consider adding or taking away hair accessories for quick changes and variety, if you wish.
(Girls) Should I have my hair or make-up done professionally?
I highly recommend this! It will take your pictures up a notch and make you love them even more. Some senior girls who don’t normally wear much makeup have been hesitant about this until they saw themselves on camera. The look is simply stunning! It will give you a boost of confidence and really make your eyes sparkle.
I never know what to do with my hands, should I be nervous about this?
A good photographer will provide direction to you so that you are feeling confident and comfortable throughout the entire process. Those hands ARE a big deal and I will give them meaning and purpose.
What type of location should I choose?
Choose an outdoor location with a variety of backdrops. Professional photography will separate the subject from the background so that YOU are the focus. Don’t stress over it! If you choose me as your photographer, I will provide some favorite locations (and examples) to help you narrow down your choices.
What is the most important factor when choosing a photographer to take my senior pictures?
The absolute most important consideration should be the photographer’s portfolio, long before you even look at what is included! I had a mom that wanted to book with me because she liked my work. We began talking about a location that would suit her son. She came back and told me she found someone that offered a lower cost and decided to go with the other photographer. I told her I respected her decision and wanted her to choose what was going to be best for them. But I also explained that every photographer has a unique level of experience, talent, equipment, and style, suggesting that she take a look at the portfolio of the other photographer before she made her final decision. Within minutes I received an email back stating that she wanted to book with me instead. She preferred the quality and style that I offered and felt the value I provide was worth the price difference. The lesson: take a look at those portfolios! Book with a photographer that you connect with at every level so that you have no regrets.
What’s the big deal about digital images?
Not every photographer will give you the copyright permission to use and print your digital images without limitations. Carefully look into what is included before you book a session. If the session fee only covers the photographer’s time, you can expect additional costs for printing packages and some may not give you the option for digital images at all, or they come with an additional fee. My sessions always include ALL of your digital images, without limitations on how you use them.
